PURE MICHIGAN--U.P. PASTIES AT THE GRAND HAVEN FARMER'S MARKET--ORDER SOME TODAY!!!

U.P. (Upper Peninsula) Pasties, pronounced like past not paste, are a Michigan tradition since the miners from Cornwall, England came to the Upper Peninsula  to mine the rich deposits of iron and copper.  Pasties were the preferred lunch for the miners.  The wife could bake the pasties, wrap them in a heavy thickness of newspaper which would keep the miner's pasty warm in his lunch bucket or coat pocket until lunchtime.  The hot meal was a message of love from his wife to a miner deep in the earth.  The elaborate pastry edge around the pasty served as a handle for the miner.  He could hold onto the edge of the pasty, and not get his food dirty from his hard-working hands.



The Pasty:  Pastry covered sirloin steak, potatoes, carrots, and rutabaga.



Martha, Tom's cousin, and I went to the Grand Haven Farmer's Market this morning.  There we met the DeVree Family who sell Pasties, quote "An Up North Tradition...An Old Family Recipe."  All the ingredients in their pasties come from premium Michigan ingredients.  The whole pasty is truly Made in Michigan!!!!

I missed getting a picture of the whole DeVree family as I am still getting use to being the picture taker since Tom's passing, and by the time I remembered I needed to take pictures, Emily and Eleanor had gone for a walk.  Next time!
